History of Boats
As boating enthusiasts, we enjoy every aspect of boating culture, including its history! It’s interesting to look at where boats came from and where they are today, so here’s a little history lesson on the subject:
The first boats were dugout-style canoes made from felled trees. Ancient civilizations used boats to navigate waterways and expand their hunting and gathering ranges. In some parts of the world, humans made boats out of woven reeds. These boats resembled a basket and usually had a waterproofing substance like tar on one side to prevent leaks. As civilizations progressed, boats became larger and more elaborate. Their range grew from local streams and rivers to lakes and finally seas and oceans. This led to exploration, the creation of trade routes, and the further spread of human civilization.
Common Building Materials
Things have come a long way since the days when boats were made out of fallen trees and reeds. Many boats today are made from aluminum or fiberglass, although wooden boats can still be purchased, too. The largest boats, including many commercial fishing boats, are often constructed from steel. These more modern building materials give boats more rigidity and strength than ever before while also making them less prone to leaks. If you’re looking for a boat for weekend use, the chances are it will come with some type of fiberglass or aluminum hull. Some models even feature high-tech Kevlar reinforcing, which helps to create an even higher strength-to-weight ratio.
Types of Boat
There are as many types of boat as there are things to do on the water, and maybe even more. Boats that are made for leisure are often equipped for tow sports, fishing, lounging, diving, and cruising. Working boats usually have powerful engines, strong hulls, and the necessary equipment for the job at hand. That could be commercial fishing, towing, navigating rough waters, or serving as a platform for divers.
By Body of Water
One good way to differentiate types of boat is by the body of water they’re meant to travel on. The main differentiation here is between saltwater and freshwater. Saltwater boats need to be resistant to corrosion so usually they’re built from aluminum or fiberglass. If they’re made from iron, steel, or some other ferrous compound, they’ll usually have a thick coating of paint to protect them. Boats that travel on freshwater can be made from many different types of material. Since most bodies of freshwater have significantly less wake than their marine counterparts, freshwater boats often have shallower hulls that can cruise on the water at high speeds. Boats that are built to travel in deep ocean generally need to have a deep hull that can give them more stability in heavy surf.
