Mercury History
When the company first started in 1939, they began as a small shop in Wisconsin when founder E. Carl Kiekhaefer purchased the failing Thor outboards company with the interest of improving the products to improve the company. These new products were eventually introduced at the Milwaukee Sentinel Sportsman’s Show where the new name would be cemented in the market. Known as Kiekhaefer Marine until 1971 when they adopted the name you know today, Kiekhaefer, who was a former engineering student at the Milwaukee School of Engineering and the University of Wisconsin, spent countless hours improving each new model that was released until there was no question that the company was top tier.
While Mercury Marine has a strong relationship with the military and supplies motors to the armed forces, law enforcement, and emergency services, during its early years at the start of World War II, the prohibition of leisure aluminum products threw a curveball at the company. But they adapted by switching to manufacturing two-man chainsaws for the military as well as drone engines for the Army Air Corps. Not only did they establish a long term relationship with the US military, but they received highest marks for performance, reliability, and ease of operation.
Innovation
After the war, the company was able to refocus its efforts on the engines they originally set out to make and this time the improvements happened in the realm of speed. The motors themselves were slimmer and more compact, improving performance and making it easier to get up to speed. In fact, once they picked up their innovation game, the ball started rolling and didn’t stop. They pioneered a number of now iconic features, like the first splined propeller shaft (which eliminates the need for a shear pin), the first in-line four-cylinder two-cycle outboard, and even the first outboard to produce one horsepower per cubic inch. This is because they’re committed to bringing you the best product they can provide. And it’s carried their name to be synonymous with high performance and high quality.
Recent Developments
Today’s lineup of products include models that are still incredibly popular and widely used by a range of water enthusiasts and workers. They continue to supply their products to a broad range of services and people, including a recent donation of boats and outboard engines to assist the Hurricane Harvey relief. They’ve also played a major role in developing the local economy of their homebase in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. They continue to improve their products, through better materials and designs and by streamlining functions, as well as exploring more sustainable options for future generations.
We’ve only covered some of the most important aspects of the company, but it’s hard to describe in words what you can experience for yourself in person if you stop by North Georgia Watersports to see what all the fuss is about.
